Alright, guys, let’s talk about “19 inches of venom.” Sounds crazy, right? Well, it kinda was. This whole thing started because I wanted to build a custom display for… well, let’s just say for some project stats I wanted to keep an eye on. I didn’t want some tiny little screen, I wanted something BIG.

So, I scavenged around and found this old 19-inch monitor. It was dusty, had some scratches, but the screen itself was still good. Perfect! I ripped off the casing, carefully, I might add. Didn’t want to break anything important. It was surprisingly easy, just a bunch of screws and some plastic clips.
Getting the Guts Out
- Unscrewed the back panel. So. Much. Dust.
- Disconnected a few ribbon cables. Gotta be gentle with those things.
- Pulled out the circuit boards. Looked way more complicated than I expected.
- Separated the LCD panel from the backlight. This was the tricky part.
Now I had the bare LCD panel. It felt super fragile, like I could snap it in half with my bare hands. I cleaned it up with some screen cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Gotta get rid of those fingerprint smudges!
Making it Work
This is where things got a little technical. I needed a controller board to, you know, actually control the display. I ordered one online – had to make sure it was compatible with my specific LCD panel model. There are tons of different ones, so doing some research before paid off big time, and I made sure to get the correct one for the model.
While waiting for the part to arrive, I used a special double sided tape, you know, the strong kind used for mounting stuff, to fix the LCD panel.
Once the controller arrived, I connected everything up. It was mostly plug-and-play, which was a relief. I hooked it up to my computer, held my breath, and… it worked! I saw my desktop, stretched across this huge, naked LCD panel. Success!

It wasn’t pretty, mind you. Just a bare screen with wires sticking out. But it worked. That’s the important part. I spent the next few days figuring out how to mount the whole thing and make it look at least somewhat presentable. Ended up using some scrap wood and a lot of hot glue. Hey, it’s functional, okay?
So, yeah, that’s the story of my “19 inches of venom.” A bit of scavenging, some careful disassembly, a little bit of technical know-how, and a whole lot of patience. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and it displays exactly what I wanted it to. And I have a working display to show all the stats needed.
