So, I’ve been seeing this question pop up everywhere – “Is GTA Online cross-play?” – and honestly, I was curious myself. I mean, how cool would it be to rob banks with my buddies, even if they’re on PlayStation and I’m on PC? So, I decided to do some digging and, well, experiment a little.

My Little Experiment
First, I jumped onto my trusty PC. Fired up GTA Online, no problem. Then, I called my friend who’s glued to his PS5. We both logged in, tried to join each other’s sessions…and nothing. Zilch. Nada. We tried everything – invites, searching for each other, the whole shebang. Still no luck.
Then I thought to myself, “Time to try a different approach, maybe a different console will work”. So, I texted a friend with an XBOX Series X and had us repeat the steps. The same problem, we couldn’t play together.
Feeling a bit defeated, I hit the forums and fan pages. Turns out, I wasn’t alone. Loads of people were asking the same question, and the answer, sadly, was pretty clear.
The (Disappointing) Truth
As of right now, GTA Online does not support full cross-play. That means:
- PC players can only play with other PC players.
- PlayStation folks are stuck with other PlayStation folks (PS4 and PS5 can play together, though!).
- Same goes for Xbox users – Xbox One and Series X/S can connect, but not with other platforms.
It’s a bummer, I know. I was really hoping to cause some virtual mayhem with all my friends, regardless of their gaming platform. It seems the way the game is it just does not work.
