Cannot decide St Lucia vs Curacao? Compare these popular islands side by side very easily here.

Must read

Alright, let’s talk about a couple of islands I checked out: St. Lucia and Curacao. I’d heard bits and pieces about both, seen the pictures, you know how it is. Decided I needed to see for myself what the real deal was.

So, first up was St. Lucia. Booked the trip, flew down there. Getting off the plane, the air hits you, warm and humid. Got myself sorted and started exploring. The big thing everyone talks about is the nature, and yeah, they aren’t wrong. Those Piton mountains? They’re massive, seriously impressive sticking right out of the water. I did some driving around, hiked a bit into the rainforest areas. It’s incredibly green, very lush. Found some nice beaches too. It’s got that dramatic, raw beauty down.

But here’s the thing… I didn’t always feel totally at ease exploring everywhere. Maybe it was just my vibe, but walking around some spots, especially as it got later, I felt like I needed to be extra aware. Stuck to the main areas mostly after dark. Beautiful place, absolutely, but that feeling just lingered a bit for me.

Fast forward a bit, I decided to give Curacao a try. Heard it was different, maybe more about the beaches and the Dutch-style towns. Flew in, grabbed a rental car right away. That was a good move. Spent a lot of time just driving around the island, checking out different spots. Willemstad, the main town, is super colorful, really enjoyed walking around there. Headed out to the western beaches – Kenepa Grandi, Cas Abao, places like that. Really nice sand, clear water.

What struck me most about Curacao was how comfortable I felt. Driving was easy, walking around felt fine, even at night in town. Just felt more relaxed, less on edge. Seemed like quite a few people were traveling solo too, bumped into a couple of folks doing their own thing. The whole atmosphere just felt… easier to navigate, more laid-back for exploring independently.

So, how do they stack up from my trips?

  • Feeling Safe: This was the biggest difference for me. I felt significantly more comfortable just wandering and exploring in Curacao. St. Lucia, I was just a bit more cautious, maybe hesitant to venture too far off the beaten path alone sometimes.
  • The Views: St. Lucia wins for dramatic, knock-your-socks-off natural scenery. The Pitons, the thick jungle – it’s really wild-looking. Curacao is pretty, definitely has beautiful beaches and that cool colorful town, but it doesn’t have that same towering, volcanic landscape.
  • Getting Around & Vibe: Curacao felt easier to just drive around and do your own thing. Felt a bit more open, maybe? St. Lucia seemed more geared towards tours or staying closer to your base, partly influenced by that safety feeling I had.
  • Traveling Alone: I found Curacao pretty easy as a solo person. Didn’t feel out of place, easy to blend in or chat with others if you wanted.

Bottom line? Both islands have their charm. If you want that epic, lush, mountainous scenery and you’re okay with being a bit more careful about where and when you wander, St. Lucia is stunning. But for me, the ability to relax, drive everywhere easily, and just feel safe exploring freely tipped the scales. Curacao just fit my travel style better. I’ve actually been back to Curacao since that first trip, which probably tells you something. It just felt like a better fit for the way I like to experience a place. That’s my take, anyway, just based on walking around and seeing things for myself.
