Aussie Football vs Rugby: Which Sport is Tougher and More Physical to Play? (Comparing Player Challenges)

Must read

Alright, so today I’m gonna ramble about something I’ve been messing with lately: Aussie Football vs. Rugby. Figured I’d share my experience, ’cause why not?

Aussie Football vs Rugby: Which Sport is Tougher and More Physical to Play? (Comparing Player Challenges)

It all started when I was flipping through channels and stumbled upon an Aussie Football game. Looked kinda like rugby, kinda like soccer, kinda like a whole lotta chaos. I was intrigued, so I dove in.

First thing I did was hit up Google. I needed to understand the basic rules. Like, what’s with the oval ball? Why are there so many dudes on the field? And what’s a “mark” even mean? Watched a few “Aussie Rules for Dummies” videos on YouTube. Helped a bit, but honestly, it was still confusing.

Then I tried watching a full game, focusing on a single player. Tried to follow where they went, what they did, how they reacted. This was a bit better, started to see some patterns. Still didn’t understand half the calls, but I was getting there.

Next up: Rugby. Now, I’d seen rugby before, but never really paid attention. So, same deal. Google, YouTube, the whole shebang. Found out there are actually different kinds of rugby (Union and League), which just added to the confusion. Chose Rugby Union ’cause it seemed more popular.

Again, watched some games. Rugby seemed more…structured? More about set pieces and big collisions. Aussie Football was more free-flowing, more running. At least, that’s how it looked to my untrained eye.

Then, the fun part: I decided to try playing! Found a local park where some folks were tossing around a rugby ball. Joined in (after asking politely, of course). Turns out, running with that weird-shaped ball is harder than it looks! Got tackled a few times, which was… enlightening.

Tried kicking the ball in both styles. Aussie Football kick is all about that spiral, trying to get distance and accuracy. Rugby kick felt more like a punt, aimed at gaining territory. My kicks were awful in both cases, but hey, I tried!

To really get a feel for the difference, I looked for drills online. Found some Aussie Football drills focused on marking and handballing. Rugby drills were all about tackling and scrummaging. Tried a few of each in my backyard (much to the amusement of my neighbors, I’m sure).

The biggest takeaway? They’re both tough sports! Aussie Football seems to require more endurance and agility, while Rugby seems to prioritize strength and power. But both are incredibly physical and require a ton of skill.

  • Aussie Football: Lots of running, jumping, and kicking. High-scoring games.
  • Rugby: More emphasis on set pieces, tackling, and rucking. Lower-scoring, more strategic.

Am I an expert now? Hell no! But I’ve got a better appreciation for both sports. It’s been a fun little project, and I’ve learned a thing or two. Plus, it got me off the couch for a bit, which is always a win.

So yeah, that’s my Aussie Football vs. Rugby adventure. Maybe I’ll pick up one of them properly one day. Or maybe I’ll just stick to watching. Either way, it’s been a good time!
