Arccos Golf Sensors Review: What Are The Pros and Cons? Everything Golfers Really Need to Know Before Buying.

Must read

Alright, so I’ve been meaning to talk about my little adventure with these Arccos golf sensors. I’d seen them around, heard folks talking, and my game, well, let’s just say it needed some kind of intervention, or at least a good hard look at what was really going on out there. I figured, why not, let’s see what all the fuss is about and if these things can actually tell me something useful.

Getting Started with the Arccos Sensors

So, I finally decided to pull the trigger and ordered a set. The box arrived, and yeah, I was pretty keen to get into it. Tore it open, and there they were, a bunch of little sensor nubs. First impression? They looked neat enough, pretty light, which was good.

Then came the part of actually getting them onto my clubs. I unscrewed the little caps and started twisting them into the grips. Honestly, it was a bit more fiddly than I expected. Some of my older grips were a bit stubborn, and I was worried about damaging something. Took me a good chunk of an evening to get them all sorted and feeling secure. You gotta make sure they’re on there good, otherwise, well, you can imagine.

Next up was pairing them with the app. Downloaded it, signed up, all the usual stuff. The pairing process itself… well, it mostly worked. I had to restart my phone once because a couple of sensors just wouldn’t show up. You know how tech can be sometimes – just needs a good old turn-it-off-and-on-again. Eventually, got all 14 clubs talking to the app. Phew.

  • Screwing them in felt a bit like a delicate operation at times.
  • The app setup was okay, but not entirely seamless for me.

My First Rounds: The Real Test

So, armed with my newly smart-ified clubs, I headed to the course. The first thing I noticed? You absolutely need your phone with you, and it needs to be in your front pocket, or somewhere it can detect the impact. I usually like to keep my phone in the bag, so this was a change. A bit annoying, if I’m being honest, feeling it there while I swing.

Shot detection was mostly pretty good. It picked up most of my shots, which was cool. But, and it’s a big but, it wasn’t perfect. There were times it missed a shot completely, especially softer chips or putts if I wasn’t careful. And sometimes it would get the club wrong. I’d hit a solid 8-iron, and it would think it was a 7 or a 9. That meant going into the app after the round, or even during, to edit things. And let me tell you, after you’ve just duffed a chip, the last thing you want to do is fiddle with an app to tell it you duffed a chip.

I remember one round, it logged a practice swing as a full shot right off the tee. My playing partners had a good laugh when I told them the app said I drove it 5 yards. Fantastic. So yeah, post-round editing became a bit of a ritual, which kind of takes away from the “automatic” promise a bit.

Drowning in Data: What Did I Actually Learn?

After a few rounds, the app started to build up a picture of my game. It showed me my average distances for each club, fairways hit, greens in regulation, putting stats – the whole shebang. And this is where it got interesting, and a little painful.

Seeing my actual, real-world distances for each club was an eye-opener. My ego might think I hit my 7-iron 160 yards, but Arccos was there to politely (or not so politely) tell me it was more like 145 on a good day. That was probably the most immediately useful bit of info. Forced me to club up a bit more.

Then there’s the “Strokes Gained” analysis. At first, it just seemed like a load of complicated numbers. “You’re losing strokes on approach,” it would say. Well, yeah, I could have told you that! But, after a while, I started to see patterns.

  • It really highlighted how bad my short game around the greens could be.
  • And it showed me specific yardages where I was consistently weak.

That kind of specific feedback, once I waded through the data, was actually pretty decent. It gave me stuff to focus on during practice, instead of just bashing balls aimlessly.

Living with Arccos Day-to-Day

The sensor batteries are supposed to last a good while, and for the most part, they have. I think I’ve only had one die on me mid-round in the year or so I’ve had them. Still, it’s another thing to keep an eye on. And you gotta buy replacements when they do go.

And then there’s the subscription. After your initial trial period, you’ve got to pay an annual fee to keep using the shot tracking and analysis. Another subscription! It’s like everything these days wants a piece of your wallet every single month or year. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s definitely something to factor in. I grumbled a bit when that renewal came up.

As for durability, they’ve held up surprisingly well. I was a bit worried they’d get smashed or fall off, but they’ve stayed put. They get a bit dirty, but a quick wipe and they’re fine. So, points for that.

So, What’s the Final Word on These Arccos Gizmos?

Look, are Arccos sensors going to magically transform you into a scratch golfer overnight? Absolutely not. Don’t even think about it. But are they useful? Yeah, I think they can be, for the right kind of golfer.

If you’re someone who loves data, really wants to understand the nitty-gritty of where you’re gaining and losing shots, and you don’t mind the phone-in-pocket thing and a bit of post-round admin, then they’re probably worth a look. They give you insights you just can’t get otherwise, unless you’re paying a caddy to track every shot.

For me, it’s been a bit of a love-hate thing. I use them, then I don’t, then I go back to them. They definitely showed me some hard truths about my game, which I guess is a good thing. It’s just that sometimes, ignorance is bliss, especially when you’re shanking it into the woods. It’s like a lot of this golf tech – it’s another tool, but it’s not the whole toolbox. And sometimes, it just gives you more detailed reports on how badly you played. But hey, that’s golf, right?
