Okay, so the other day I was watching that old Berserk anime, you know, the 1997 one. And like always, I got to thinking about Guts. He’s such a badass character, but I realized I’d never really thought about his race. So, I decided to do some digging.

My first thought was, “He’s probably just white, right?” I mean, the setting feels kinda European, medieval-ish. But then I remembered some of the other characters, and things got a bit more complicated.
The Search Begins
I started by, of course, Googling. Typed in stuff like “Guts Berserk race” and “Berserk character ethnicities.” I found some forum posts, a few Reddit threads, and some, uh, interesting fan theories. Nothing concrete, though.
Then I went to some Berserk wiki pages. Skimmed through Guts’s page, looking for any hints. Nothing. Checked out pages for other characters, hoping for some context. Still nothing super helpful.
Delving Deeper
I spent a good chunk of time just rewatching parts of the anime, paying close attention to Guts’s appearance. His features, his hair, his skin tone compared to other characters. Honestly, it’s all pretty ambiguous. He’s got dark hair, sure, but so do a lot of people.
I even tried looking up the creator, Kentaro Miura, to see if he’d ever said anything about it in interviews. Found some interviews, but nothing that specifically addressed Guts’s race. It was all about the story and themes, which, you know, fair enough.

My Conclusion(sort of)
So, after all that, I’ve come to the conclusion that…it’s just not explicitly stated. And honestly, it probably doesn’t matter. The world of Berserk is fictional, and while it draws inspiration from real-world history and cultures, it’s not a one-to-one representation of any particular place or time.
Guts is Guts. He’s a complex character, and his race is really just a minor detail in the grand scheme of things. His struggles, his strength, his relationships – that’s what makes him who he is. The ambiguity in Berserk and lack of clear racial classification made me believe that it might be up to personal interpretation.
Maybe some fans have headcanons about it, and that’s cool. But for me, I’m content with not knowing. It adds to the mystery of the character and the world.
