Average 3 Wood Carry Distance: How Do You Compare?

Must read

Okay, so I’ve been trying to dial in my 3-wood distance lately. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, to be honest.

I started by just heading to the range, you know, the usual. I warmed up with some wedges, then moved through my irons, and finally pulled out the 3-wood. My first few swings? Not great. I was topping the ball, slicing it, you name it. The ball flight looked more like that of my 9 iron than my 3 wood. I was frustrated, and I was thinking that I might need to find a new 3 wood.

I decided to record a few swings on my phone. Watching them back, I noticed a couple of things. My stance was too narrow, and I was swaying back during my backswing, throwing off my balance. It’s hard to be consistent that way.

Making Adjustments

So, I widened my stance a bit, trying to get a more stable base. I also focused on keeping my weight centered during the backswing, instead of letting it drift to my back foot. I took a few practice swings, really exaggerating the feeling of staying centered.

  • Stance: Widened it for better balance.
  • Backswing: Focused on staying centered, no swaying.
  • Tempo: Tried to smooth things out, no rushing.

Then, I hit some balls. And wow, what a difference! I was hitting the ball much more solid, and the flight was straighter and higher. I was actually starting to see that penetrating ball flight I’d been hoping for.I started hitting them and recording the distance.

I kept at it, hitting maybe 50 balls, making small tweaks here and there. I experimented with ball position, moving it slightly forward and back in my stance to see how it affected the flight. I also played around with my grip pressure, trying to find that sweet spot between too loose and too tight.

By the end of the session, I was consistently hitting my 3-wood further and straighter than I had been in a long time. My carry was around 230. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a huge improvement. I felt like I finally had a 3-wood I could rely on. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m definitely heading in the right direction!
