Okay, so I’ve been struggling with my shots lately, mostly slicing the ball. A friend suggested I learn to hit a draw or a fade, so I figured, why not? I’m gonna take you through my journey of figuring this out.

The First Swings (and Misses)
First things first, I went to the driving range. I grabbed my 7-iron, teed up a ball, and just started swinging. No real plan, just trying to get a feel for the club. The balls mostly went straight, some still slicing, and definitely no draws or fades. I spent, like, an hour just whacking balls, getting more and more frustrated.
Getting Some Advice
After that first disastrous session, I chatted with that same friend who gave me the idea. I needed some guidance, you know? He’s no pro, but he’s way better than me.
He gave me some basic pointers:
- For a draw: He said to aim slightly right of the target, close the clubface a bit, and swing along my body line.
- For a fade: He told me to aim left, open the clubface a little, and swing along that same body line.
Sounded simple enough, right? Wrong.

Back to the Range, Round Two
Armed with this new (and hopefully improved) knowledge, I headed back to the range. This time, I tried to be more deliberate. I focused on my stance, my grip, and where I was aiming.
I started with trying to hit a draw. I aimed right, closed the clubface a little… and still sliced it. Big time. I tried again, adjusting my stance, my grip… still slicing. I think I spent another hour just butchering draws.
Then I switched to trying to hit a fade. I aimed left, opened the clubface… and hooked the ball! Like, a massive, ugly hook. I swear, the ball probably landed two fairways over.
It was a mess. I spent the rest of the day alternating between slices, hooks, and the occasional straight shot that felt like a total accident.

Slightly Less Terrible
I wasn’t about to give up, so I went back. And back again. And again. Slowly, very slowly, things started to (sort of) click.
I found that if I really focused on swinging smoothly and not trying to kill the ball, I had more control. I started to get a feel for how adjusting my stance and clubface affected the ball flight. It wasn’t pretty, but I started to see some slight curves in the right direction.
I wouldn’t call them draws or fades yet. More like “slightly-less-awful-slices” and “not-quite-as-bad-hooks.” But hey, it was progress!
Still Work to Be Done…
So, that’s where I’m at. I’m definitely not hitting consistent draws or fades yet. It’s going to take a lot more practice, and maybe even a lesson or two from a real pro. But I’m starting to understand the mechanics a little better. It’s really about feel and subtle adjustments.
The main takeaway so far? Golf is hard. Really hard. But I’m stubborn, so I’ll keep at it. I’ll update you guys when I finally manage to hit a proper draw or fade without it being a complete fluke.
