Okay, so I got it in my head that I wanted to put together a John McEnroe outfit. You know, the classic 80s tennis look. Figured it’d be fun for a costume party, or maybe even just to wear around, ’cause why not?

Getting Started: The Basics
First, I started with the shirt. McEnroe was all about those Fila striped polos.
- I looked around for a used one. It is difficult to find something vintage.
- I considered bying a new reproduction,It is not the same.
I checked some local store.
Shorts and Headband
Next up: the shorts. Super short, white, and preferably with a little red trim. That was surprisingly hard to find! I thought about just getting some regular white athletic shorts, but they just wouldn’t have that same vibe.
And the headband! Can’t forget the iconic red headband. That, at least, was easy. I picked up it.
Shoes and Socks
Shoes were another challenge. McEnroe wore those classic Nike tennis shoes, the ones with the simple swoosh. I could not get that.

I got simple white one.
Socks: gotta have those high, white athletic socks, pulled up almost to the knees. I already owned a pair that would work, so that was a win.
The Racket (Optional, But Awesome)
Now, for the full effect, I really wanted a wooden tennis racket. I remembered my uncle had one, I borrowed it.
Putting It All Together
Finally, I had all the pieces. I tried everything on, and honestly, it looked pretty good! A bit goofy, maybe, but definitely recognizable.
It’s not perfect, but it definitely captures the essence of McEnroe’s style. I added a bad temper for full authenticity. Good for a costume, or a great laugh.
