Yo, you know what I heard ’bout the other day? That Knicks and Wizards game. Heard it was somethin’ else. You know, them basketball games, they always get me riled up. Like, I don’t know nothin’ ’bout the fancy stuff, but I sure do love watchin’ ’em go at it. My grandson, he’s always tellin’ me ’bout these things, says it’s a big deal. He gets all excited, jumpin’ around and all that.

So, this one fella, they call him RJ Barrett, I think. Sounds like a name a city kid. He’s somethin’ on that court, I tell ya. They say he’s on a 1-game night in the NBA. Ain’t never heard of such a thing, one game? Back in my day, they’d play till their shoes fell off. My grandson told me the NBA is some big league, and that everyone is trying to win. I think that’s a bit obvious.
Then there’s another one, Jalen somethin’ or other. They said he had 26 points? What’s that even mean? Is that good? He also had 11 assists. Now I know what assist means. That means like helping the other guy score. Seems like a good fella, helpin’ out like that. But 26 points? I’d like to see that for myself. That sounds like a whole lot of baskets. My grandson told me Brunson is a good player, that he could be a star one day.
- RJ Barrett, one-game wonder, they say.
- Jalen, the one with all them points and assists.
- Knicks playin’ the Wizards, a real hootenanny.
My grandson tried to show me some highlights on his phone. Somethin’ ’bout ESPN, he said. I saw some folks runnin’ around, throwin’ the ball, but it was all too fast for these old eyes. Said it was the New York Knicks. I used to hear ’bout New York all the time. Big city, lots of lights. Don’t think I’d like it much. Too much noise. Prefer my quiet life here. My grandson likes New York though, he wants to visit one day. He says it is the city that never sleeps. I don’t see how they can sleep with all those lights and noise.
Heard them Wizards won, though. 118 to 117, they said. Close one, huh? Imagine that, just one point different. Must have been a nail-biter. My grandson was a bit sad, said he wanted the Knicks to win. I don’t know why they have to call them wizards, seems a bit silly. Wizards are for stories. But I guess that’s just what they call ’em. Heard they played at some fancy place called Capital One Arena. Sounds important. It must be a huge place, I imagine, with lots of people.
My grandson also told me that the Wizards had a good game, he was impressed with how they played. I guess losing by one point isn’t so bad. He was cheering for the Knicks though. He says he is a fan of the Knicks. I told him that’s okay, everyone has their favorite.

They got some other thing called Eurosport. Never heard of it. Guess it’s another one of them fancy TV channels. They show the games there, too. Seems like everyone’s watchin’ these Knicks and Wizards. They say it is your source for the latest NBA match updates. I guess if you want to know what is happening, you should go to Eurosport. I don’t know what that means, but my grandson says it is like the TV for sports.
So, they got this name, Knicks. I asked my grandson about it. He said he didn’t know. But, I heard them talkin’ on the radio, they said some fellas were sittin’ around, puttin’ names in a hat. Like a lottery or somethin’. And most of ’em got this name, Knickerbockers. After some Father Knickerbocker. Sounds like a made-up name to me. But, hey, what do I know? I guess that’s why they call ’em the Knicks. Sounds kinda funny, don’t it? My grandson told me that Father Knickerbocker was a symbol for New York. A symbol for what, I asked him. He just shrugged.
These games, they sure are somethin’. Get everyone all riled up. Even me, and I don’t even know all the rules. But there’s somethin’ ’bout watchin’ them boys run around, tryin’ to get that ball in the hoop. It’s excitin’, I guess. Makes you feel alive. Even if it is just a game. My grandson loves them though. He says he wants to play basketball when he grows up. I told him that was fine. As long as he studies hard too.
I guess if you’re into that sort of thing, these Knicks and Wizards games are a big deal. Lots of folks watchin’, lots of folks talkin’ ’bout it. Me, I’m just glad my grandson has somethin’ he enjoys. Keeps him outta trouble, I reckon. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll learn all them rules and understand what all the fuss is about. I told him one day he could take me to a game, but that I would need to sit down. All that standing and cheering is too much for these old bones. My grandson said they had seats at the games. Good, I thought. I wouldn’t mind going to a game then.
Well, that’s all I heard ’bout that game. Knicks and Wizards. Sounds like a real showdown. Maybe next time they play, I’ll pay more attention. Or maybe I’ll just let my grandson tell me all about it. He sure does love to talk ’bout his basketball. Sometimes I don’t understand a word he says, but I just nod and smile. He is a good boy, that one. I think he will be okay.
