Public House SF : Your Ultimate Guide to San Franciscos Gastropub

Must read

Okay, so I finally checked out Public House SF, that spot right by the ballpark. I’d heard mixed things, but hey, I’m always up for trying a new place, especially one with a good beer selection.

First off, I went there on a game day. Big mistake? Maybe. It was packed, naturally. I maneuvered my way through the crowd, which felt like navigating a maze. I finally found a tiny spot at the bar. I’m not claustrophobic, but even I felt a little squeezed.

The Beer

The beer list? Extensive. That’s one thing they definitely get right. Lots of local craft brews, which I love. I opted for a hazy IPA from a brewery I hadn’t tried before – can’t remember the name, oops – and it was pretty solid. Not mind-blowing, but definitely good.

  • So. Many. Beers. Seriously, you’ll find something you like.
  • Lots of IPAs, if you’re into that.
  • They had some interesting sours, too.

The Food

I was hungry, so I ordered the burger. I mean, it’s a pub, right? You gotta try the burger. It took a while to come out, but again, game day, so I wasn’t surprised. When it finally arrived, it looked… decent. The patty was cooked medium, like I asked, but it was a little dry, to be honest. The fries were good, though – crispy and well-seasoned. A bit salty for some folk, but I liked it.

The Vibe

Loud. Very loud. It’s a sports bar, so expect lots of cheering (and groaning, depending on how the game’s going). If you’re looking for a quiet, intimate place, this ain’t it. But if you want to soak up the energy of a game day crowd, it’s perfect. I even ended up chatting with the people next to me about the game – we bonded over a particularly bad call by the ref.

Overall?

Would I go back? Maybe. Probably not on a game day unless I was actually going to the game afterward. It’s a good place to grab a beer with friends, especially if you’re a sports fan. The food is okay – nothing to write home about, but it does the job. It’s all about the atmosphere and the beer selection, really. I think I’d give it another shot on a quieter day to see if the food is any better when the kitchen isn’t slammed. I figured I needed to share.
