See 1 Man and 1 Horse Conquer the Trail (Beginners Guide to Horseback Riding)

Must read

Oh, boy, let me tell you about this “adventure” I had the other day. It all started with me, this bright idea, and a horse.

So, I’ve always been fascinated by horses. Majestic creatures, right? And I thought, “Why not give horseback riding a try?” I’d read some stuff online, like this book for beginners, and it made it sound so easy, so peaceful. “Embark on an exhilarating journey,” they said. Yeah, exhilarating is one word for it.

First off, I had to figure out what to wear. I mean, you can’t just show up in your everyday clothes. I dug out some old boots and the tightest pants I could find. I even read somewhere to use a gentle grip on the reins, and I thought, “Okay, I’m a gentle guy.”

Then came the whole process of meeting the horse. I’m not gonna lie; I was a little nervous. I’d seen some posts online about horses sensing fear, and let me tell you, I was feeling a healthy dose of it. But I tried to play it cool, you know? “Hey there, big fella,” I said, trying to sound all confident and in control.

Next up, getting on the horse. Now, I’m not the most athletic person, and this horse was, well, tall. It took a few tries, a lot of awkward maneuvering, and maybe a little help from the stable hand, but I finally made it up there.

Once I was up, it was a whole different ball game. I tried to remember all those tips I’d read. “Sit up straight,” “heels down.” Easy, right? But keeping my balance while this giant animal moved underneath me was way harder than it looked.

  • I’m supposed to use my legs and seat to tell the horse what to do?
  • Walk, trot, canter?
  • It felt more like a chaotic dance where I was just trying not to fall off.

We started with a walk, which was relatively okay. I even started to relax a little, thinking, “Maybe I’ve got this.” But then we tried trotting. Oh, the trotting. It was like riding a furry, four-legged jackhammer. I was bouncing all over the place, trying to hold on for dear life.

And let’s not even get started on cantering. I’d read about riders standing high over the horse’s back, but I was just clinging on, hoping not to fly off. I’m pretty sure I spent more time trying to avoid falling than actually riding.

The Aftermath

After what felt like an eternity, but was probably just a short ride, I finally got off the horse. My legs were shaking, my butt was sore, and I was pretty sure I’d pulled every muscle in my body. I definitely gained a newfound respect for horseback riders. It’s not as easy as it looks, folks.

So, that’s my “1 man and 1 horse” story. It was messy, it was chaotic, and I’m not sure I’ll be doing it again anytime soon. But hey, at least I’ve got a good story to tell, right?
