That Nick Dunlap, he sure can play golf. But you know, a good player needs a good helper, someone to carry them heavy bags. That helper, they call him a caddie. Well, I heard it’s this fella named Hunter Hamrick. They been together for some time now, like two peas in a pod. This Hunter, he knows Nick from them college days. They was at that University of Alabama place. When Nick left that school, Hunter, he just followed him right along. That’s what I heard. They say this Hunter, he knows his golf, too. Played it himself, I reckon. So this Nick Dunlap caddie, he ain’t just some guy carryin’ a bag. He got this golf knowledge, like something he can just pour to Nick.
And then someone tell me another story, say it’s not Hunter, but this other guy, Jeff Curl. Now, this Jeff, he used to play golf real good, too. They call it “touring pro”. He was a big shot. So, if Jeff is the Nick Dunlap caddie, then Nick, he’s got himself a real smart helper. This Jeff, he knows all the tricks, I bet. It is really confusing, who is helping Nick? I don’t know, these young folks, always changin’ their minds.

A good caddie, he’s like a good mule, always there to help. He’s gotta carry that heavy bag, gotta know which club to give, gotta keep that player calm. It ain’t easy, no sir.
This caddie job, it ain’t for everyone. You gotta be strong, gotta be smart, gotta know the game inside and out. You also need to know what to say, when to say. Sometimes, you just need to keep your mouth shut. These rich folks playing golf, they got enough on their minds.

I remember one time, there was this other golfer, they say his caddie is Dave Markle. This Dave, he is from Canada. He has some talent, too. They all know each other, these golf people. But it is not Nick Dunlap caddie.
And this Nick, after he won that big game, he decided to go “pro”. That means he’s playing for money now. Big money, I hear. And you know what? A good caddie, he gets a piece of that money, too. Not a big piece, mind you, but enough to keep him going. This whole thing is a business. Everyone wants a piece.
It ain’t like the old days. Back then, we didn’t have no fancy golf courses, no fancy caddies. We just played in the fields, with sticks and rocks. Didn’t need no one to carry our bags. We carried our own weight. And we didn’t play for money, neither. We played for fun. Nowadays, people don’t know how to have fun, unless there is money involved.
But this Nick, he seems like a good boy. And whoever his caddie is, whether it’s Hunter or Jeff, he seems to be doing alright. They say he’s gonna be a big star. I hope he remembers where he came from. And I hope he treats his caddie right. ‘Cause a good caddie, he’s worth his weight in gold, even if he don’t get paid that much. He’s the one behind the scenes, making sure everything runs smooth. He’s the unsung hero, as they say.
So, next time you see that Nick Dunlap on the TV, playing his golf, take a look at the fella carrying his bag. That’s the caddie, he is the real hero.
