Okay, so, I’ve been thinking a lot about famous people lately. You know, like, how many are there? Is there a way to even figure that out? It’s a pretty wild question when you stop and think about it.

So, I started digging around. I mean, what else do you do when you have a random thought like this? First, I tried to find out if anyone else had ever wondered about this. Turns out, some science blogger, Samuel Arbesman, had actually looked into this. He was trying to find the fraction of the global population that’s considered notable. Interesting, right?
Then, I stumbled upon some discussions about young people wanting to be famous. It got me thinking about why that’s such a common dream. What’s the deal with fame, anyway? Does it really make people happy? I started to read some articles on this topic.
Next, I found this list of 25 famous numbers, like pi and the golden ratio. Totally different, I know, but it got me thinking about how numbers can be famous too. It’s all about their importance, I guess.
Of course, I couldn’t resist looking up some actual celebrities, like Britney Spears and Sandra Bullock. Their names always pop up, right? I read a bit about their lives, what they’re up to, the usual stuff.
Then, I took a turn and started exploring YouTube. I mean, YouTubers are famous too, in their own way. Their channels are all about sharing videos and building a following. That got me into looking at some popular youtubers and read some news about them.

I also found this website where you can vote for your favorite American personality. It’s all based on some algorithm that combines a bunch of factors. Pretty cool how they try to quantify fame like that.
And then, there’s the whole “27 Club” thing. I mean, it’s kind of dark, but it’s this idea that a lot of famous musicians died at 27, like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. It got me thinking about the whole relationship between fame and tragedy. Is there a certain age which they are prone to leave?
But back to the original question – how many famous people are there? I found this one estimate that said something like 0.0086% of the population is famous. So, if you do the math with the current world population, which is like 7.8 billion, that comes out to around 670,800 people. That’s actually a lot of celebrities, isn’t it?
And get this – I learned about riders! They’re basically these lists of demands that performers have for their gigs. It can be anything from specific foods to a certain type of dressing room.
- First I read about if anyone’s actually considered trying to calculate the number of famous people on earth.
- Then I learned about why young people want to be famous.
- Then I looked at some actual celebrities.
- Then I looked at some famous youtubers.
- Then I found some estimate of around 0.0086% of the population is famous.
- Finally I learned about riders, the list of demands that famous people use as criteria for performance.
So, yeah, that was my little journey into the world of fame. It started with a simple question and ended up all over the place. But hey, that’s the fun of exploring random stuff, right? You never know where you’ll end up. But one thing I’m sure about, there’s not a definite answer to the question of “how many famous people are there.” It is all depending on your definition of “famous.”
