Why I Dug Into Marc Davis’ Games Today
Got this itch after arguing with my buddy about controversial NBA calls last night. We kept bringing up Marc Davis’ name, so I decided to actually look up his famous games. Started by grabbing my old laptop where I keep all my sports notes.
How I Tracked Down The Games
First thing I did was pull up YouTube highlights from the past 15 seasons. Typed “Marc Davis controversial calls” and holy cow, the results blew up. Kept pausing videos every time I saw his bald head and glasses near a ref monitor. Made a list of games where players or coaches totally lost their cool.
The Messiest Moments I Found
After like three hours rewinding clips, three games stuck out like sore thumbs:
- 2018 Rockets vs Warriors Game 7 – Chris Paul straight up bumping Davis after a call, almost got thrown out. Still can’t believe Harden’s reaction when they didn’t call that three-pointer foul.
- 2016 Finals Game 6 Cavs-Warriors – Rewatched Curry fouling out. Davis signaled that sixth foul and Curry smashed his mouthguard so hard I thought he’d break teeth.
- Clippers-Suns 2021 playoffs – That overturned Booker foul in the fourth quarter? DeAndre Ayton’s face looked like he saw a ghost when Davis waved it off.
What Pissed Me Off Doing This
Some replays were so garbage quality I had to squint to see jersey numbers. Had to cross-reference NBA box scores when video timestamps got fuzzy. Worst part? Realizing some key angles vanished from the internet – like Davis’ explanation after the Rockets game just poofed.
Why Bother With All This
Seeing how one ref’s calls changed championship games? Man, I’m never yelling “refs suck” again without checking who’s actually reffing. Gonna start a separate notebook just for tracking controversial refs now. Already told my buddy we need coffee to argue about Davis’ 2013 Knicks-Pacers game next week.
