How to Set Up a Giant 20 ft Santa Decoration Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Must read

The Big Unboxing Disaster

Man, I thought this would be easier. The box arrived looking like it fought a bear – all battered at the corners. My driveway became Santa Central. Ripped that cardboard open, and holy cow, parts flew everywhere like festive shrapnel. Unpacked bags filled with poles, connectors, fabric sections, and weird plastic bits I had no clue about. Found the instruction manual buried under everything. Just two pages? Seriously? Felt super thin for such a giant Santa.

Making Sense of the Mess

Right off the bat, I laid every single piece out on the lawn. Figured I needed to see what I was dealing with. Looked like a giant, confusing puzzle. My husband helped sort – poles here, connectors there, that huge red suit fabric piled carefully. First step: building the internal frame. Found the thickest poles labeled “MAIN LEGS.” Connected them with those weird elbow joints. Clicked together okay, felt wobbly though. Kept checking the tiny pictures every few seconds. One pole almost smacked me in the face when a connector slipped!

Next was the torso frame. Way more poles! Spent ages trying to figure out which pole went where based on the microscopic labels printed on them. Almost gave up, but finally saw the tiny lettering with a magnifying glass. Needed to attach the shoulders to the legs. Oh boy, that was awkward. Needed three hands! Yelled at my husband to come hold one shoulder while I wrestled the crossbar into place. My fingers hurt already.

Bringing Santa to Life

Time for the suit! Unfurled that massive red fabric – so freaking heavy! Had to carefully drape it over the skeleton frame. Lining up the arm holes over the frame shoulders was like trying to thread a needle blindfolded. We kept lifting and shifting, lifting and shifting. Finally got one arm hole on. Totally exhausted by then. Slid the fabric slowly down the torso frame. Had to poke the wires inside to help guide it – felt like surgery. Almost ripped the fabric near the neck seam when it snagged. Panicked for a second!

Attaching the head was the big moment. That thing is enormous! Took both of us to lift it onto the neck pole. Wobbled like crazy up there until we secured the base clips. Tightening those clips felt impossible – needed pliers in the end. My fingers went numb. His belt was easier, just velcro straps around the waist. Boots clipped onto the leg poles.

The Final Yard Battle

Now the fun part: standing him up! Took all our strength to hoist that frame upright. He tilted dangerously at first – heart nearly stopped! We steadied him, then realized step one was forgotten: measuring the yard. Whoops! Shoved him sideways a few feet. Needed to stake him down immediately before the wind got ideas. Hammered those long metal stakes through the foot loops deep into the grass. Didn’t trust the wind one bit.

Plugged him in for the lights. Held my breath. Nothing. Nada. Checked the extension cord – forgot to turn it on! Flicked the switch… and boom! Instant Christmas magic. Well, almost. His hat was slightly crooked. Had to grab a ladder to straighten it while my husband held the ladder steady. Worth it. He looks awesome towering over the house.

Santa Survival Tips

  • Seriously, clear space: My driveway was too cramped. Use the widest part of your yard from the start.
  • Label those parts: Mark poles & connectors with tape before you lose your mind.
  • Two people minimum: Lifting the frame solo? Forget it.
  • Stake before you light: Wind is a sneaky Santa killer.
  • Check lights early: Way harder to fix once he’s up.

Total time? A solid, slightly frustrating three hours. Saw a YouTube video claiming 45 minutes… yeah right! Happy with the final look though. Might need a reindeer crew next year. Maybe some hot cocoa breaks planned in. And definitely, definitely, bigger stakes. Now, where’s my beer?
