So, this whole thing with 118 Cedar St. It wasn’t some big plan, you know? I just kept walking past it, day in, day out. And there was this one little patch, right by the sidewalk, technically part of the verge, I guess, but everyone just ignored it. Looked like a sad, forgotten corner next to the property line of 118 Cedar St. Weeds everywhere, couple of old plastic bags tangled up. Just an eyesore, really.

My Bright Idea, Or So I Thought
One Saturday, I was just staring at it, and I thought, “Heck, why not me?” I had some time on my hands. Figured I could at least pull out the big weeds, make it look a tiny bit better. It wasn’t even about 118 Cedar St itself, more that little spot that bugged me every time I passed. So that was my “project,” if you wanna call it that. Just a bit of tidying up. No grand ambitions.
First off, I wasn’t even sure if I should be messing with it. Is it city property? Does it belong to 118 Cedar? Who knows, right? I tried asking a neighbor, old Mrs. Henderson from down the street. She just shrugged and said, “Been like that for years, dear. Doubt anyone cares.” That was good enough for me, I guess. Didn’t want to get into any red tape nonsense.
Getting My Hands Dirty
So, the next weekend, I got started. My tools were pretty basic:
- A rusty old trowel I found in the shed.
- Some gardening gloves that had seen better days.
- A couple of trash bags.
Let me tell you, it was more work than I expected. Those weeds had roots like you wouldn’t believe. And the amount of hidden junk under there! Old bottle caps, bits of plastic, even a single sock. Seriously, a sock. Took me a good couple of hours just to clear out the obvious mess. My back was killing me by the end of it.
I didn’t do anything fancy. No new plants, no fancy mulch. Just cleared the rubbish, pulled the worst of the weeds, and tried to even out the soil a bit. I even found a few old bricks half-buried and used them to make a sort of rough border. Nothing special, but it looked a bit more intentional, you know?

So, What’s The Big Deal?
In the end, it’s not like I turned it into a botanical garden or anything. It’s still just a small patch of dirt next to 118 Cedar St. But it’s a cleaner patch of dirt. No more trash, fewer monster weeds. It doesn’t make my eyes hurt when I walk past anymore.
A few days later, I saw someone actually stop and look at it, not in a “what’s that mess?” way, but just a glance. Maybe they noticed. Maybe not. To be honest, I mostly did it for myself. It just felt good to take a little piece of ignored space and make it a tiny bit better. Didn’t ask permission from anyone official, didn’t expect any thanks. Just saw a small thing I could do, and I did it. Sometimes, that’s all there is to it, I suppose. And you know what? That little corner by 118 Cedar St, it’s still looking decent. Maybe I’ll even throw some wildflower seeds there next spring. Who knows.
