Alright folks, buckle up ’cause I’m about to spill the beans on my latest obsession: the Jeremy McGrath RC dirt bike. Yeah, you heard right. I’m talking about those mini replicas that can actually tear up some dirt. I’ve always been a fan of McGrath, so when I saw these things existed, I knew I had to get my hands on one.

First things first, I did some digging. I wasn’t just gonna buy the first one I saw. I checked out a bunch of reviews, watched a load of YouTube videos, and read through forums. I wanted to know what the common issues were, what upgrades people were doing, and basically, what I was getting myself into. Ended up settling on a LaTrax model, seemed like a good starting point for a newbie like me.
So, the bike arrived, and the first thing I did was rip it open like a kid on Christmas morning. The thing looked pretty sweet, right out of the box. I charged up the battery and headed straight for the backyard. Now, I’m no RC pro, but I figured, how hard could it be? Turns out, harder than I thought! This thing is twitchy! I spent the first hour mostly crashing into fences and flowerpots. My dog was having a field day chasing it around.
Okay, time to get serious. I started playing around with the throttle control, trying to get a feel for how sensitive it was. Slow and steady was the name of the game. I found a patch of dirt and started practicing figure eights. It was still a bit wobbly, but I was starting to get the hang of it. I even managed to pull off a few little jumps without completely face-planting.
After a few days of backyard bashing, I decided it was time to hit the local park. They’ve got a small dirt track there that’s usually filled with BMX riders. I felt a little out of place with my tiny RC bike, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right? I spent a couple of hours just riding around, getting used to the different terrain. There were some bumps and ruts that really challenged the bike, but it held up pretty well.
Of course, I couldn’t leave well enough alone. I started looking into upgrades. The first thing I did was swap out the stock tires for something with a bit more grip. Made a huge difference! The bike felt way more planted, especially on loose dirt. I also upgraded the shocks. The stock ones were pretty soft, and the new ones helped soak up the bumps a lot better.

Next up, I’m thinking about upgrading the motor and ESC (Electronic Speed Controller). I want a little more power and top speed. I’ve been eyeing a brushless system, but I’m still doing my research. Don’t want to blow the thing up on my first try.
All in all, this Jeremy McGrath RC dirt bike thing has been a blast. It’s a fun way to unwind and get outside. Plus, it’s a great excuse to tinker with something and learn new things. If you’re thinking about getting one, I say go for it! Just be prepared to crash a lot at first.
