TN Vols Black Uniforms: History and Fan Reactions

Must read

Alright, let me tell you about my little adventure trying to recreate those Tennessee Volunteers black uniforms. I saw ’em online and thought, “Man, those look slick! I gotta see if I can pull that off myself.”

First things first, research, research, research! I scoured the internet, looking at every picture and video I could find of those unis. I wanted to get the details right – the shade of black, the orange accents, the font on the numbers, everything.

Next up, I hit up my local sports apparel store. I was hoping to find a blank, black football jersey that I could customize. No luck. Everything was either too expensive or the wrong style. So, I went the online route. Ended up snagging a generic black jersey from one of those online retailers. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a decent starting point.

The real challenge was the orange accents and the numbers. I considered a few options: stencils and paint, iron-on vinyl, or even trying to get it professionally embroidered. I’m not exactly a master craftsman, so I ruled out the stencils and paint pretty quickly. Embroidery would have been the best, but also the most expensive. So, I decided to give iron-on vinyl a shot.

I downloaded the Tennessee Volunteers font (or at least, something close to it) and used my wife’s cutting machine to cut out the numbers and the Power T logo in orange vinyl. This part was a little nerve-wracking. Messing up a single cut could mean wasting a bunch of vinyl.

With the vinyl cut and weeded, it was time to iron it onto the jersey. This is where I got really careful. I made sure to position everything exactly where I wanted it and used a heat press (borrowed from a buddy) to get a nice, even bond. One tip I learned the hard way: use parchment paper between the vinyl and the iron to prevent it from melting!

After a few hours of cutting, weeding, and ironing, I finally had something that resembled the Tennessee Vols black uniforms. It wasn’t perfect, mind you. There were a few minor imperfections here and there. But overall, I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

I wore it to a game watchin’ party, and it was a hit! People were asking me where I bought it, and I got to tell them the whole story of how I made it myself. That was pretty cool.

Would I do it again? Absolutely! It was a fun project, and I learned a lot in the process. Plus, I now have a unique piece of Vols gear that no one else has.

  • Learned: Iron-on vinyl can be a pain, but it’s a decent option for customizing apparel.
  • Discovered: A heat press makes a HUGE difference compared to a regular iron.
  • Realized: I need to work on my patience when it comes to weeding vinyl!

So, yeah, that’s my story of trying to recreate the Tennessee Vols black uniforms. It was a blast, and I’m already thinking about what project to tackle next.
