How can you improve your wizards soccer skills? Try these easy practice drills starting today!

Must read

Alright, so today I decided to really get down to it with some soccer practice. I started calling this particular session ‘wizards soccer’ in my head, mostly because I wanted to focus on making the ball obey me, you know? Like having some kind of magical control over it.

Getting Started

First thing I did was just get a feel for the ball again. Spent a good amount of time just tapping it back and forth between my feet, trying to keep it really close. Then I moved onto some basic dribbling. I set up a few markers, nothing fancy, just some old water bottles, and practiced weaving in and out. The goal was control, trying to make sharp turns without the ball getting away from me.

Working on Skills

After warming up with dribbling, I focused on a few key things:

  • Passing: I practiced against a wall mostly. Trying to get the passes crisp and accurate, hitting the same spot over and over. Focused on using the inside of my foot for better control. It sounds simple, but getting consistent takes work.
  • Ball Control: This was about receiving the ball smoothly. I’d kick it against the wall and work on stopping it dead with different parts of my foot – inside, outside, sole. Trying to absorb the pace, make it stick.
  • Shooting: This is always fun but frustrating. I picked out spots on the goal (well, the makeshift goal I set up) and just practiced hitting them. Some shots went wild, others felt really good off the foot. Consistency is the tough part here.

The Grind and Feeling

Honestly, keeping focused wasn’t easy. Dribbling around those markers felt awkward sometimes, like my feet were tangled. And controlling the harder passes off the wall? Yeah, the ball bounced away more than I’d like to admit early on. It’s really about repetition. You just gotta keep doing it.

I tried a drill kind of like that ‘Fox and Rabbits’ thing someone mentioned once – basically trying to keep the ball while moving quickly in a small space, imagining a defender. It really pushes your footwork and forces you to keep your head up a bit.

Wrapping Up

By the end of the session, maybe an hour or so, I was definitely tired but felt pretty good. Did I become a soccer wizard? Nah, not even close. But, I definitely felt improvement in my touch and control compared to when I started. The ball felt a little less like a random object and more like an extension of my foot, at least sometimes. That’s the progress I was looking for. Definitely going to keep this ‘wizards soccer’ idea going in future practices. Just gotta keep grinding.
