Getting Started with These Little Guys
Okay, so I had this idea kicking around in my head for a while. Wanted to make some small figures, you know, like those little yellow guys, but make ’em look like everyday people. Sort of ‘people minions’. Just a fun little project to keep my hands busy.

First thing was getting the materials together. Didn’t want anything fancy. Went down to the craft store, grabbed a block of air-dry clay. Stuff’s easy to work with, no need for baking or anything complicated. Also got some basic acrylic paints – just the primary colors, plus black and white. Figured I could mix anything I needed. Found some old small brushes lying around the house.
Making the Shapes
Then I started actually making them. Cleared off a space on the workbench. Took a lump of clay and just started rolling it, squishing it. Tried to get a basic body shape first. Some turned out tall and skinny, others short and round. It was messy, clay got everywhere.
Found out pretty quick that making them stand up was tricky. Had to flatten the bottoms really well. Made a few different body types just to see what looked right. It wasn’t about perfection, just getting a feel for it. Let me tell you, getting the arms right was a pain. They kept falling off or looking weird. Had to really press them on firmly.
- Rolled out basic body shapes.
- Tried different heights and widths.
- Focused on making flat bottoms so they could stand.
- Struggled a bit with attaching arms.
Once I had a few shapes I was happy with, I let them sit overnight to dry properly. Air-dry clay takes a while, gotta be patient.
Painting and Finishing Touches
Next day, it was painting time. This was the fun part, but also kinda fiddly. Put down some newspaper first, learned that lesson the hard way before. Started painting the basic outfits. Tried giving one a little blue shirt, another a red one. Mixing the skin tones was a bit of guesswork, just adding tiny bits of red and yellow to white until it looked vaguely human.
Painting the faces was the hardest. Tiny little eyes and mouths. Used the smallest brush I had, even thought about using a toothpick at one point. They definitely didn’t look like professional models, more like quirky little doodles. Some looked grumpy, some looked surprised. It just happened that way.
For hair, I just painted it on. Black, brown, yellow. Kept it simple. Didn’t bother with fancy stuff like wire for glasses or fabric for clothes this time, maybe for the next batch. Just wanted to get these first ones done.
The Result
So, after the paint dried, I had this little lineup of ‘people minions’ on my desk. They’re rough, definitely handmade looking. You can see the fingerprints in the clay if you look close. But honestly, I kinda like them that way. They’ve got character. It was a good way to spend an afternoon, just making something physical with my hands instead of staring at a screen. Simple project, good fun. Might make some more later, try adding more details.
