What is July 18 famous for? Learn about Nelson Mandela Day.

Must read

Alright, buckle up, because I’m about to walk you through what I got up to on July 18th. It was a day, lemme tell ya.

It all started with me deciding I was finally gonna tackle this home automation project I’d been putting off. I’m talking about setting up smart lights and a voice-activated coffee maker. I know, I know, super extra, but hear me out.

First thing’s first, I dragged my butt outta bed (way later than I planned, thanks to Netflix) and headed to the hardware store. I grabbed a bunch of smart bulbs, a smart plug for the coffee maker, and some extra wiring just in case. I always grab extra wiring. You never know.

Got back home, and this is where the “fun” began. I started swapping out the old bulbs for the new smart ones. That was easy enough, until I got to the dining room chandelier. Seriously, who designs these things? It took me, like, an hour to wrestle with those tiny screws and get the new bulbs in. I almost threw the whole thing out the window.

Next up was the coffee maker. Plugged the smart plug into the wall, plugged the coffee maker into the smart plug. Downloaded the app, connected it to the Wi-Fi (that took a couple of tries because I always forget my password), and boom, instant smart coffee maker. I even set up a schedule so it starts brewing automatically in the morning. Genius, right?

Then came the real challenge: getting everything to talk to each other. I’m using that voice assistant thingy from Amazon. Spent a solid two hours yelling at it trying to get it to recognize the new lights and the coffee maker. It kept misunderstanding me, turning on the wrong lights, or just straight up ignoring me. I swear, technology hates me sometimes.

Finally, after much cursing and fiddling with the settings, I managed to get everything working. I can now turn on and off the lights, dim them, and even start the coffee maker with my voice. I felt like I’d conquered Mount Everest.

To celebrate, I made myself a cup of coffee (using my new smart coffee maker, obviously) and plopped down on the couch to watch some TV. It was a long day, but I actually got something done. And now I have smart lights and a voice-activated coffee maker. Totally worth it.

Here’s a quick recap of the day:

  • Woke up way too late
  • Went to the hardware store
  • Fought with the dining room chandelier
  • Set up the smart coffee maker
  • Yelled at a voice assistant for two hours
  • Finally got everything working
  • Drank coffee and watched TV

Lessons Learned:

Patience is key. Don’t get discouraged when things don’t work right away. Just keep at it, and eventually, you’ll figure it out.

Read the instructions. I know, it’s boring, but it can save you a lot of time and frustration.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are tons of tutorials and forums online. If you’re stuck, someone out there probably knows the answer.

So yeah, that was July 18th in a nutshell. A day of small victories and technological triumphs. Until next time!
