Is Turbocharger Better Than Supercharger? Simple Pros & Cons!

Must read

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with cars for a while now, and I always get asked: “Which is better, a turbocharger or a supercharger?” So, I decided to finally put this to the test, in my own way, of course.

Is Turbocharger Better Than Supercharger? Simple Pros & Cons!

First, I got my hands on two similar cars. It wasn’t exactly scientific, I will be the first to say it. I couldn’t get the exact same models, but they were close enough in terms of engine size and weight. One I fitted with a turbo, the other with a supercharger.

The Installation Process

  • Supercharger Install: This felt more straightforward. I bolted the thing onto the engine, connected the belt, and… well, that was pretty much it. It’s directly driven by the engine, so it felt simpler to get my head around. I will say the belt alignment took some time to get right!
  • Turbocharger Install: This was a bit more involved. I had to mess with the exhaust system, figure out the oil lines, and then there was the whole intercooler setup. It felt like a bigger project, more plumbing than anything. I thought to myself, “Oh no, I am going to mess this all up!”

The Test Drive

Next, I took both cars for a spin. This is where things got interesting!

  • Supercharger Experience: Right off the bat, I felt the power. No waiting, just instant boost. It felt really responsive, especially when pulling away from a standstill. Very very fun to drive!
  • Turbocharger Experience: At first, nothing much. Then, whoosh! Once the turbo spooled up, it felt like a rocket. The power surge was definitely more dramatic, but that lag, that wait before the power kicked in, was noticeable. I could see myself getting frustrated in traffic.

The Results & Thoughts

I took some simple data, mainly acceleration times and, just general ‘feel’. No dyno, just good old seat-of-the-pants testing.

  • Acceleration: The supercharged car was quicker initially, but the turbocharged car caught up and overtook it at higher speeds.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Surprise, surprise, the turbo was slightly better on fuel when I wasn’t flooring it. I guess because it’s not always ‘on’ like the supercharger.
  • Overall Feel: This is the biggest factor. The supercharger felt more predictable and easier to manage. The turbo was more exciting, but that lag was a real thing.

So, which is “better”? It’s all about your driving feeling. If you want instant response and don’t mind a bit more fuel consumption, the supercharger is your friend. If you crave that top-end rush and are okay with a little lag, go turbo. Personally, I get a kick out of the supercharger’s instant kick, but, I will admit, that turbo rush is addictive!

This was my little experiment. It’s not perfect, but it gave me a better understanding of how these things actually work in the real world. Hopefully, this helps someone who asked the question I get asked almost daily!
