So, I was messing around in my garage the other day, and I got this idea to build something with a hydraulic lever. I’ve always been fascinated by how much power you can get from hydraulics, like those giant construction machines. I figured, “Why not try making a mini version?”

Getting Started

First, I needed to gather some stuff. I found some old pieces of wood, a couple of syringes (the kind you use for medicine, without the needles, of course!), and some plastic tubing. I also grabbed some strong glue and a few screws. My goal was to make a simple lever that could lift a small object using the power of water pressure.

Building the Base

I started by cutting the wood into a few pieces to create a base and a lever arm. I made sure the lever arm could move freely up and down. I screwed a small block of wood to act as a fulcrum – you know, the point where the lever pivots. It wasn’t pretty, but it was sturdy.

Setting up the Hydraulics

Next, I took the two syringes. One was a bit bigger than the other. I filled both with water, making sure to get rid of any air bubbles. Air bubbles can make the whole thing spongy and less powerful. I then connected them with the plastic tubing, making sure the connections were tight. I used some glue to seal them up, just in case.

  • Fill syringes with water.
  • Remove air bubbles.
  • Connect with tubing.
  • Seal connections tightly.

Putting it all Together

I attached one syringe to the base and the other to the lever arm. The idea was that when I pushed down on the syringe on the base, the water would push the other syringe up, lifting the lever arm. Kind of like a mini excavator, but way simpler.

The Test

It was time to test it out! I placed a small toy car on the end of the lever arm. I slowly pressed down on the plunger of the base syringe. And guess what? It worked! The lever arm rose, lifting the toy car. It was a bit shaky, and I had to push pretty hard, but it definitely lifted it.

Improvements and Fun

I realized the connection between the syringe and wood is loose, I screwed them tight. It did improve a lot!

I was pretty stoked! It wasn’t perfect, of course. I could probably make it smoother and more powerful with better materials and some fine-tuning. But for a first try, made with stuff I just found lying around, it was a pretty cool demonstration of how a hydraulic lever works.

It just goes to show you, with a little bit of ingenuity and some basic principles, you can build some pretty neat stuff!
