Alright, so today I’m gonna share with you guys something I messed around with the other day – a 2003 V-Rod. Yeah, the old-school Harley. It’s not every day you get to play with one of these, so I figured, why not document the whole thing?

Getting Started

First off, I got my hands on this bike, and man, it was a sight. It had been sitting for a while, so the first thing on my mind was, “Let’s get this thing running.” I started by checking the basics – fuel, battery, you know, the usual suspects.

  • Checked the battery: It was dead as a doornail. So, I hooked it up to a charger and let it do its thing.
  • Inspected the fuel lines: Looked a bit gunked up. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to clean them out before trying to start it.

Diving Deeper

After getting some juice in the battery, I tried cranking it. No dice. It sputtered a bit but just wouldn’t turn over. Time to dig deeper.

  • Pulled the spark plugs: They were pretty fouled up. Cleaned them up and re-gapped them just to be sure.
  • Checked the air filter: Dusty, but not terrible. Gave it a quick clean anyway.

The Real Work

Still no luck. I was starting to think this was gonna be a bigger project than I thought. I decided to really get into it.

  • Drained the old fuel: Man, that stuff was nasty. Replaced it with some fresh high-octane gas.
  • Pulled the carburetors apart: This was a pain, but I wanted to make sure everything was spotless. Cleaned every jet and passage I could find.
  • Checked the valve clearances: Just to be thorough, I made sure they were within spec.

The Moment of Truth

After putting everything back together, it was time for the moment of truth. I turned the key, hit the starter, and… it roared to life! Man, that was a sweet sound. It idled a bit rough at first, but after warming up, it smoothed out nicely.

With the engine running, I moved on to the rest of the bike.

  • Changed the oil and filter: Basic maintenance, but always important.
  • Checked the brakes: They were a bit spongy, so I bled the lines and got them feeling good.
  • Lubed up the chain: It was pretty dry, so I gave it a good dose of chain lube.

Finally, I took it out for a test ride. It felt great to be cruising on this thing after all that work. It’s not every day you get to bring an old bike back to life, and it’s a pretty rewarding feeling.
